qotd: empathy

Empathy requires inquiry as much as imagination . . . Empathy means acknowledging a horizon of context that extends perpetually beyond what you can see.

  1. I just love this. I see she has an essay about Whitman in a collection called Specimen Days too. And a novel, The Gin Closet. Is she someone you’ve exhausted? (I’ve yet to follow up with The Recovering, but i will. If you would just stop talking about so much other good stuff that I also want to read at the exact same time.)

    1. Interesting – I’ll have to look into the Whitman essay, though he’s one of those poets I used to admire much more in the past. I’ve heard mixed things about her novel—she talks a lot about her growth as a writer in The Recovering, and it seems like even she’s ambivalent the novel. Curious to see what the style’s like!
